Malissa works primarily in encaustic, creating contemporary art with the most ancient painting medium still in use today. She makes her own encaustic paints rather than purchasing them commercially so that she has more control over the medium. Coming from a family of 'traditional' painters of portraits, landscapes and still lifes, it took her a while to believe that her drive to create abstract and contemporary work met the instincts of a 'real' artist. Formerly a native Texan, she has lived in Lawrence for four years and has been painting for five. As a dual-career person, she is also the president of a statewide, non-profit organization that works with at-risk students.
