David is a Lawrence architect who formerly served as City Commissioner and Mayor. He is also a long-time amateur furniture maker and potter. He began creating wooden pieces for his home when he realized he could not find commercially produced furniture he liked at a cost that was acceptable. He first worked in clay in 1978, studying with a Kyoto-trained potter, while living in Japan during a hiatus from graduate studies.

After decades away from the wheel, David began taking classes at the Lawrence Arts Center in 2006, where he continues to produce work. Where architectural design is an exercise in careful planning and precise detailing performed at a considerable distance from the ultimate product, ceramics offers an opportunity to work more spontaneously and directly with materials. David's sculptural pieces reflect his interests in science, natural forms and the geography of his native Kansas.
