Whimsical,
mysterious, evocative or all of the above - that's what Dian’s art is meant to
be. She does not usually start out with a clear idea of what is going to happen in a
piece. If she starts to have an idea, it is liable to change totally during the
art process. Her abiding themes are the mysteries behind the mundane,
archetypes and a stream-of-consciousness mixing of images. Dian’s 'canvases' are
often metal but sometimes wood or vellum. She uses a variety of media - from
graphite to grease pencils, crayon to oil paint -
within which she embeds found objects and scanned
materials, all often within one work. She works slowly, going back to a piece
again and again but her emphasis is to always discover new ideas contained
within a piece. This year for the ArtWalk she will also be showing some of her landscapes,
which is a
return to an old love of hers. Dian graduated from KU in 2000 with an MFA in
painting. |
