"The Secret of Sun Mountain"
Oil, oil pastel, wax, stone and cord
21 x 14 inches

The
initial creative influence for Barbara's art is place, whether it is familiar
or new to her. She is fascinated with ancient cultures and has visited many
important Native American sites in the Southwest and Midwest. She always
explores the history of such places, and images and meanings of her visits soon
appear in her work upon returning to the studio.
Barbara's inspiration
frequently comes from the land of her native state, Kansas - particularly the
subtle prairie contours and glorious skies. She has used these elements as
either principal subject matter or metaphors for the mysterious, inner
landscape of the unconscious.
Her ideas are also sparked by an interest in how
myths, symbols and art forms of early cultures are linked to archetypal
imagery. For instance, sun and moon symbols appear in the art of many cultures. 'As modern people we may think we have original ideas and
imagery, but we are inevitably linked to our unknown ancestors by these
archetypal shapes and forms.' |
