"Artichoke"
Oil on canvas
16 x 20 inches
2010
$200 |
Emily paints out of curiosity and paints the
simple things in life such as flowers, fruits and legumes. She aims to
communicate the beauty of an artichoke, cherry or apple and to express an
appreciation for these everyday, taken-for-granted 'wonders.' All she needs is
a brush, canvas and oil paint. The paints are thick, luscious and bountiful, and
potentially full of color to inspire. The viscosity of oils allows the textural
aspects of nature's bounty to be captured. Through layers of paint, texture is
exposed and defined; and the layers show an object's relationship to its
surroundings. One brushstroke can express the whole idea of a painting and
impart a textural, simple beauty. Cherries are not just red fruit any more:
they become vibrant and alive with color, shadow, texture and contrast.
Still-life painting teaches Emily to appreciate nature's simplicity and
subtleties. |
