Roger spent his early years in southeast Kansas, and from that rural environment developed a
deep appreciation for nature and the open landscape. Relocating to Lawrence to attend the
University of Kansas, he became influenced by the campus's unique collection of architecture.
Concurrent with his formal education, Roger also began to study photography, and was further
influenced by the B&W photographs of Ansel Adams and his peers.
With a solid understanding of B&W photography as a basis, Roger soon began using larger-
format cameras and more color photography to capture nature, landscapes and architecture. He
is drawn to state and national parks, or to subjects that have geological, historical or purely
aesthetic significance.
Roger says he is "most concerned about the negative impact we have on the landscape and on
the rural areas that he has come to know. That his photography might be used to document,
protect or preserve any such worthy subject is undoubtedly his greatest aspiration."
