David's art is about humanity and our earthbound ties, the land and our responsibility towards it. His work is imbued with primitive symbols that relate to his heritage as well as the natural world. David's interest in the land comes from growing up on a working farm in the Midwest. He is attracted to agrarian images – plants, agricultural tools and the fruitful soil – that he uses to symbolize life cycles such as fertility, growth, depletion and renewal.

David combines everyday objects into new compositions by employing unexpected juxtapositions through assemblage, where objects become symbols that tell stories and create metaphors. By using a variety of materials – cast bronze, ceramics, found industrial objects and agricultural tools – his work becomes energetic and visually intriguing. It is descriptive but allusive. David says, "I want my sculpture to reflect the significance and vulnerability of humankind's relation to the earth in a time of increasingly dehumanized technology."
